Hosted by Edward Lam Dance Theatre, 'The Butterfly Lovers Sound Festival' (The Sound of Art School Musical – A Mini Festival) will officially debut at the Hong Kong Arts Development Council Exhibition Hall. This sound festival is one of the programmes of the 30th Anniversary Arts Festival of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, and also an experimental project extended from the 10th anniversary special planning of the troupe's work 'The Inheritors of the Butterfly Lovers'. Curated by Cheung Kwok Wing, directed by Edward Lam, and joined by multiple performers and sound artists, this festival will create an immersive sound theatre that transcends sound, performance, and the body.
Menu Design: Seven 'Sound Dishes' to Stimulate the Five and Six Senses
The concept of the sound festival originates from a seven-course French menu—
Two Appetizer Lectures: Initiating Your 'Literary' and 'Character' Sound Journey
Three Appetizers Workshops: Engaging Your Body, Environment, and Sound Qualities in Sound Creation
Two Main Course Choruses: Singing Memories and Emotions with the Cast, Becoming Part of the Harmony
These seven sound programmes are all derived from classic songs of 'The Inheritors of the Butterfly Lovers', such as 'The Apron' and 'Eighteen Farewells (I)', 'Self-Portrait' and 'Sacrificing for Art'. Each sound dish carries the creators' re-imagination of sound and theatre, inviting the audience to embark on a journey of self-discovery and resonating with others.
It's Not Just 'Watching'—You Will Become Part of the Theatre
In this sound festival, you are not merely an audience but a participant. Guided by director Lam Wai Wai, you will use your body to sketch the lines of emotions; led by the four regular collaborating artists of 'One Singing Troupe' Chan Chi Him, Tsang Ho Fung, Lau Siu Hong, and Wong Chun Kit (video performance), you will witness how sounds transform into natural sceneries; and through the conversations with Cheung Kwok Wing, you will sense the unique soul behind each sound. The grand finale chorus will invite the audience to sing in harmony with the original cast. Whether you have been on stage or not, this is an opportunity to break the boundary between the audience and the performers, allowing your voice to intertwine with others' and spark emotions.
Embarking from the Auditory Sense, We Jointly Construct Unforgettable Memories
Curated by Cheung Kwok Wing, this edition of the sound festival offers seven sound menu experiences planned with professional musical and vocal coaching expertise; Edward Lam serves as the initiator, providing directorial perspectives and venue design; special guest Wu Lam Li, assistant coach Law Hei Yin, dance choreographer and restaging director of 'The Inheritors of the Butterfly Lovers' Lam Wai Wai, the four regular collaborating artists of 'One Singing Troupe' Chan Chi Him, Tsang Ho Fung, Lau Siu Hong, and Wong Chun Kit (video performance), as well as the original cast of 'The Inheritors of the Butterfly Lovers' Wong Wang Yuen, Cheng Kwan Chi, Lo Ka Yan, Chiu Yat Lam, and Wong Yan Kit, jointly construct the seven-course programme flow and details, ensuring that every workshop and performance becomes an unforgettable memory for the audience.
Are You Ready to Open the Sensory Gate of Sound?
Sound is not just about pitch and volume; it can also be your feeling about the world, your self-perception, and your connection with others. 'The Butterfly Lovers Sound Festival' is not only a stage for artists but your platform to voice out. Here, you will resonate with people, converse with sounds, and discover through songs: every voice deserves to be heard.
